Re: Mary and Mark Penney, 311 Chesterfield Rd, Leeds, MA: Structural assessment of
existing house and garage roofs to support proposed solar arrays.
I have investigated the existing roof framing in the areas of the proposed PV solar panel
installations. The 2-story, 32'x 40' saltbox style house, with full shed dormer on the north long
slope side, and the 24' wide attached garage were constructed in 1979. The roof framing of the
house are 2x6 top chord modified Fink designed roof trusses that forms the north shed roof as well
as the short south roof. The trusses are installed at 24" on-center, span 32', with a south roof slope
of 7/12. The house ridge is located approximately 10' in from the south wall. The garage roof is
framed with 2x6 top chord Fink designed roof trusses, installed at 24"on-center, span 24' with a
roof pitch of 8/12. The roofmg on both the house and garage is asphalt shingles.
I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar array. 21 panels are proposed on the
south house roof and 18 panels on the south garage roof. Based on a PV solar panel unit weight of
37f lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and
staggered to minimize the load to any one roof truss, the existing roof framing is adequate to
support the proposed PV arrays on both the house and garage roofs and the snow load
requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
Please contact me if you have any questions or need additional information.
