(CBI)has evaluated the existing structural framing of relevant roof and mezzanine locations at the Northampton JFK Middle School. The scope of work was to determine whether the additional weight of new mechanical equipment can be accommodated by the existing roof framing. It is CBI's understanding that two(2) mechanical units are to be used, one at each of the two locations: a) A mechanical unit with a maximum operating weight of 1,1001b is to be supported on existing steel sleepers spanning between joists at the roof, between column lines 18 and 24, and A and B; b) A mechanical unit with a maximum operating weight of 8,5001b is to be supported on an existing 4"concrete pad at the mezzanine level, between column lines 21 and 27, and A and B. According to drawings provided to CBI by BLW Engineers Inc. (BLW),the relevant roof and mezzanine structural framing is part of an addition to an earlier structure. These structural drawings are dated 1994. The engineer was Engineering Design Associates,Inc., and the architect was Tessier Associates, Inc. The roof framing consists of metal deck spanning between steel wide flange joists and girders. The horizontal members terminate at steel wide flange columns. The mezzanine framing consists of composite metal floor deck with concrete topping reinforced with welded wire fabric that spans between steel wide flange joists and girders. The horizontal members terminate at steel wide flange columns. W a I C Iii U L T I N G I NC Page 2 Northampton JFK Middle School—New Mechanical Units RE Structural Evaluation of Existing Roof and Mezzanine Framing CBI Job No.: 15118 July 9,2015 CBI used the existing structural plans and the magnitude of mechanical unit operating weights provided by BLW in order to complete this assessment. Two(2)different sets of dead and live loads were used for the two (2)different mechanical unit locations,as the roof and mezzanine support different dead and live loads. For the roof framing,CBI used a dead load of 20psf,a flat roof snow load of 35psf,and a maximum drift snow load of 60.9psf(the scaled drift snow load relevant for the roof framing taking the mechanical units was 45.7psf). The new rooftop mechanical unit will.be located within the snow drift zone. For the mezzanine framing, CBI used a dead load of 85psf,and a live load of 40psf(this live load is attributed to personnel operating within the mechanical room). CBI conservatively assumed that the yield stress of the steel members was 36ksi. In addition, CBI assumed that approximately 67%of the operating weight of the proposed 8,5001b mezzanine unit is supported by the W18x35 girder existing along column line 24. Based on our evaluation of the roof and mezzanine framing which include the loading from the two(2) new mechanical units, it is CBI's opinion that the proposed mechanical units may be installed without the addition of supplemental framing. Please refer to the attached marked-up pdf of drawing S301D for details of CBI's required placement of mechanical units. The proposed mechanical unit with operating weight of 8,5001b shall be placed on the existing concrete mechanical pad at the mezzanine with each end of the unit approximately at the center-spans of the two steel joists below; and the proposed mechanical unit with operating weight of 1,1001b shall be centered on the existing steel sleepers at the roof. Please contact the undersigned with any questions regarding our conclusions and/or recommendations.
