to support proposed solar array.
On 5/15/15 we conducted a site visit to investigate the existing roof framing in the area of the
proposed PV panel installations; on the shed dormer and on the main roof on either side of the
dormer. The house was constructed in 1908. The rafters of the original 26' wide building are full
dimension 2x6, installed at 24" on-center, spanning 12'-6" on the main roof with a 10/12 pitch,
and spans 11'-6" for the dormer roof which has a 6/12 pitch. A kneewall is located under the main
roof rafters approximately 4' in from the exterior walls. The kneewalls appear to be supported by
2x8 joists. The roofing is asphalt shingles.
I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on a PV panel unit weight of
37f lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and
staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing is adequate to support
the proposed PV array.
