(RWDI) as presented in their report dated September 27, 2013. Based on this study, the following two equations were provided to facilitate determination of the theoretical minimum weight of ballast required to resist wind-induced uplift and sliding using the site criteria as shown in Table 1. Ballast(lb)to Resist Uplift: aD •Ballast„plift = aw •q, • GCp upiift •Auplift - aD •M (lb) Ballast(lb)to Resist Sliding: aD •Ballastdrag =aw •qZ • ((GCp)*drag 'Adrag • (1/f n)+ I GCp I *uplift •A, ii - aD •M(lb) where: aw = factor on wind load from ASCE 7-05 aD = factor on dead load from ASCE 7-05 qZ = 3-second gust wind pressure (lb/ft2) for site location from ASCE 7-05, including exposure factor(KZ) and directionality factor(Kd=0.85) as per 6.5.10 of ASCE 7-05. M = self weight of assembled system (lb) for appropriate averaging area fn = frictional coefficient A,,pl ft = area(ft2) of panel(s)projected onto a horizontal plane Adrag = area(ft2)of panel(s)projected onto a vertical plane GCp I uplift = absolute value of uplift pressure coefficient for selected averaging area (GCp)*drag = highest drag pressure coefficient multiplied by the appropriate area reduction factor GCp I *uplift = absolute value of highest uplift pressure coefficient multiplied by the appropriate area reduction factor These equations were used to determine the theoretical minimum ballast required to resist wind-induced uplift and sliding, and determinations were also made for the theoretical minimum ballast required to resist seismic and snow loading conditions, with the critical loading scenario being used to determine the overall minimum ballast required. For this project, the ballast necessary to resist uplift is the worst case loading scenario. The theoretical results for the minimum required ballast at each Ecofoot2® location in their respective location in the solar panel array are shown in Dayton, OH Lexington, KY Hazard, KY Charleston, WV Harrisburg, IL 125 Westpark Road/ Centerville, Ohio 45459/ Phone: 937-428-6150/ Fax: 937-428-6154 Visit us at www.cbceng-corn # B Engineer s Dayton office ENGINEERING REPORT TO: Ecolibrium Solar, Inc. Vreeland Design Associates Re: Coopers Corner, 31 Main St, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing roof framing over the older original building to support proposed solar array. On January 13, 2014, I conducted a site visit and investigated the existing roof framing of the original store. The existing rafters are 2x10 installed at 24" on-center, spanning 15'-4", supported on W 14x43 steel beams that span 27'. The proposed solar array will use the Ecof6ot2 ballasted modular rack system from Ecolibrium Solar with the panels oriented perpendicular to the direction of the existing rafters. The Ecofoot2 and the proposed ballast is rated for 100 mph basic wind speed. The ballast, 4"x 8"x 16" concrete blocks fit in trays that are attached to the racks. The ballast trays are located approximately 3'-4" on-center parallel to the rafters and 7'-0" on-center perpendicular to the rafters. The rafters that support the ballasted rack system will need to be reinforced with an additional 2-3 - 2x10s sistered to the two nearest rafters that are found to be located under the ballast trays. To allow for flexibility to install the ballasted rack system around the existing obstacles on the roof, I recommend that the rack system be installed in the desired configuration, contact me before the installation of the solar panels, and I will conduct a site visit to assess the actual installation to determine the reinforcing requirements for those rafters that are actually supporting the installed array. I will then provide you a stamped letter certifying that the installed reinforcing is adequate to support the installed array that you can forward to the Building Inspector. The existing W 14x43 steel roof beams are adequate to support the proposed solar array. Please contact me if you have any questions or need additional information.
