This critical review engineering report provides information regarding the Ecofoot2® solar
panel support system by Ecolibrium Solar, Inc. The solar panels, supplied and designed by others,
are attached to the Ecofoot20 supports, with provided Ecofoot2® hardware, according to the
instructions and requirements of Ecolibrium Solar, Inc. The Ecofoot28 system must be installed
according to the instructions and requirements of Ecolibrium Solar, Inc. It is assumed that the butyl
adhesive used to adhere multiple ballast blocks will be installed according to the manufacturer's
recommendations. The specific construction techniques and methods chosen to install the
Ecofoot2® support system as per the requirements of Ecolibrium Solar, Inc. and as detailed in this
report are the responsibility of the installation contractor. Independent conclusions, opinions or
recommendations made by others than CBC based on the information provided herein are the
responsibility of the independent party.

The placement shop drawing attached in Appendix B depicts the location of each Ecofoot2®
support location and the actual suggested number of ballast blocks at each support as per the values
shown in Table 2 above. Based on a critical review of the ballast design calculations and placement
shop drawings, it is the opinion of CBC that said calculations and shop drawings have been
performed and prepared in accordance with the applicable provisions of the referenced standards and
accepted industry practices. CBC has accordingly signed and sealed this report and the placement
shop drawings. As such, CBC is the Engineer of Record for the structural analysis of the Ecofoot2®
system for the above referenced project.
CBC has not evaluated the existing building structure for support of the proposed solar panel
system, and this is the responsibility of others than CBC. It is assumed others than CBC have
evaluated the building structure for support of the proposed solar panel system. It is assumed the
roofing system is installed according to the manufacturer's recommendations. If conditions for this
project differ from those expressed herein, Ecolibrium Solar, Inc. and CBC Engineers & Associates,
Ltd. should be notified immediately.

The wind pressure and force coefficients used in the determination of the required ballast to
resist wind-induced uplift and sliding are based on the results of the Ecofoot2® Racking System
Wind Pressure Study performed for Ecolibrium Solar, Inc. by Rowan Williams Davies & Irwin, Inc.
(RWDI) as presented in their report dated September 27, 2013. Based on this study, the following
two equations were provided to facilitate determination of the theoretical minimum weight of ballast
required to resist wind-induced uplift and sliding using the site criteria as shown in Table 1.

These equations were used to determine the theoretical minimum ballast required to resist
wind-induced uplift and sliding, and determinations were also made for the theoretical minimum
ballast required to resist seismic and snow loading conditions, with the critical loading scenario
being used to determine the overall minimum ballast required. For this project, the ballast necessary
to resist uplift is the worst case loading scenario. The theoretical results for the minimum required
ballast at each Ecofoot2® location in their respective location in the solar panel array are shown in

On January 13, 2014, 1 conducted a site visit and investigated the existing roof framing of the
addition constructed in 1985 to the original store. I have reviewed the plans prepared by Gillen,
Kuhn, Riddle & Gray, the architectural firm that prepared the plans to confirm the roof framing
details. The existing rafters are 2x10 installed at 16"on-center, spanning 13'-4", supported on
W l Ox 19 steel beams that span 14'.
1 have reviewed the details for the proposed ballasted array. The proposed PV array, including the
ballast required to resist 100 mph wind speeds has an approximate weight of 6 psf. I have done the
necessary engineering and have determined that the existing roof framing of the addition is
adequate to support the proposed PV array.

over the older original building to support proposed solar array.
On January 13, 2014, I conducted a site visit and investigated the existing roof framing of the
original store. The existing rafters are 2x10 installed at 24" on-center, spanning 15'-4", supported
on W 14x43 steel beams that span 27'. The proposed solar array will use the Ecof6ot2 ballasted
modular rack system from Ecolibrium Solar with the panels oriented perpendicular to the direction
of the existing rafters. The Ecofoot2 and the proposed ballast is rated for 100 mph basic wind
speed. The ballast, 4"x 8"x 16" concrete blocks fit in trays that are attached to the racks. The
ballast trays are located approximately 3'-4" on-center parallel to the rafters and 7'-0" on-center
perpendicular to the rafters. The rafters that support the ballasted rack system will need to be
reinforced with an additional 2-3 - 2x10s sistered to the two nearest rafters that are found to be
located under the ballast trays. To allow for flexibility to install the ballasted rack system around
the existing obstacles on the roof, I recommend that the rack system be installed in the desired
configuration, contact me before the installation of the solar panels, and I will conduct a site visit
to assess the actual installation to determine the reinforcing requirements for those rafters that are
actually supporting the installed array. I will then provide you a stamped letter certifying that the
installed reinforcing is adequate to support the installed array that you can forward to the Building
Inspector. The existing W 14x43 steel roof beams are adequate to support the proposed solar array.

Truss Roof Addition to support proposed solar array.
On May 15, 2014, 1 conducted a site visit and investigated the existing truss roof framing of the
west rear addition constructed around 1985 to the original store. I have reviewed the plans
prepared by Gillen, Kuhn, Riddle & Gray,the architectural firm that prepared the plans to confirm
the roof framing details. The existing roof framing are 2x6 gable roof trusses installed at 24" on-
center, spanning approximately 42', with an approximate 2/12 pitch.
I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on a PV panel unit weight of
approximately 40 lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center
and staggered to minimize the load to any one roof truss, the existing truss roof framing is
adequate to support the proposed PV array.
