Zoning Board Members present and voting were: Vice Chairman M. Sanford Weil, Jr. , Alex Ghiselin, and Elaine M. Reall. The Findings of the Board under Section 9.3 for an alteration of a Pre-existing non-conforming structure were as follows: 1. The Board found that the additions to a pre-existing non- conforming structure will not be substantially more detrimental to the neighborhood than the existing non- conforming structure. 2 . Northampton, Ma Re: 10 Park St . Additions by J.A.Wright Builders Inc . W.B. Inc . Drawings 2 of 2 , 6/6/91 ( 95 ) Interior Design Dear Frank, I investigated the site with Jim VanAtta of JAWB Inc. , to determine the condition of the above foundation. We discovered through use of a steel probe that the foundation is only 12" to 18" deep rubble stone footing wall with a brick wall on it from grade up to frame. The soil is very sandy and therefore probably is the reason it never seems to have heaved. The bearing area of the footing, approximately 12"-16" wide, calculates to be sufficient with the new load of only one living floor level of 301bs . / s . f . plus 10 lbs/ s . f . dead load. The recommendation I would make is; to have them bury 2" dense styrofoam insulation around the foundations 4" below grade 24" wide continuous, at the two existing foundations to be built on. This will save energy every winter while it exists there for the purpose to prevent the potential frost heaves caused by a roof drainage failure which saturates the ground in freezing weather. I will certify that to the best of my knowledge this will be a relatively stable foundation. incerely, Tris Metcalfe a 0 Z > cn O r 0 O O Zoning Miscellaneous Additions,Repairs,Alterations, etc. Tel.No. ' Alterations NORTHAMPTON, MASS.
