Re : Industrial Building
Dear Mr. Clark:
Reference is made to our discussion of yesterday in connection
with getting an outside engineer to certify the structural
condition of the Butler pre-engineered building that is
located at the Northampton Industrial site .
I have arranged for Mr . Neil Montgomery from Philadelphia
who is a registered professional engineer in the State of
Massachusetts to come to this area on Wednesday, May 14 , 1980 .
In his possession at that time will be all of the design
calculations for the building that we erected in the Industrial
Park. On that date he will also certify the structure in
accordance with your requirements .
Many thanks for your patience .
Very truly yours ,

Dear Mr. O' Leary:
I am writing this letter per your request to confirm my inspection
of the above structure.
I have reviewed the original drawings when the building was
originally constructed. I have reviewed them again today
prior to my inspection. The structural steel has been erected
in conformance with the standards as required by Butler Manufacturing
Company. This erection provides for a 30 psf roof live load over
the horizontal projection and a 20 psf wind load on the vertical
projection.
In general, it is my opinion that this building is structurally
sound for the load conditions as originally specified and will
still carry these loads.

Re : Norton Company
Dear Mr. Clark:
Enclosed are three sets of drawings , the permit application,
and permit fee necessary to obtain a permit to renovate an
existing building owned by Oldon Realty Trust and located
on Industrial Drive.
As you know, the foundations and building shell were built
under a permit obtained during the winter of 1974-1975 .
Since an adequate tenant could not be found, the building
was never completed. Recently a good tenant has been found,
and as a result, we would like to apply for a new permit to
complete the building and make the right half of it ready
for occupancy.
This permit is to cover all work to be done by the O' Leary
Company for the building owner, Oldon Realty Trust. This
work will be as indicated on the enclosed drawings and will
comply with the latest edition of the State Building Code
and, briefly, will include the following items :
1. Masonry wall to separate tenant' s area (tenant expects
to expand into remaining area in the near future ; there-
fore, lintels for future doors will be installed) .
2 . Men' s and women' s toilet facilities .
3. Proper exits and egress complete with required exit and
emergency lighting and one ramped entrance .
4. Complete wet sprinkler system.
S. Complete lighting system.

Re : Norton Company
Dear Mr. Clark:
Per your request the following are the heat loss calculations
for the above-referenced project. All calculations are based
upon maintaining a comfort temperature of 60OF inside the
building when the outside temperature is OOF .
Heat Loss Calculations
Roof (U=0 . 16) 150 x 75 x 0. 16 x 60°F = 108 ., 000 BTU/hr
* 07 Walls (U=0. 38) 450 x 22 x 0 . 38 x 60OF = 223 ,000 BTU/hr
Air Infiltration (I air change) 150 x 75 x 22 x
0 . 017 x 60OF = 252 , 000 BTU/hr
Door Leakage 300 if x 0 . 69 x 60OF = 12 ,- 000 BTU/hr
TOTAL 595 , 000 BTU hr
Total heat loss is 595 , 000 BTU/hr output which is equivalent to
80% of the input BTU ' s required for the heating system. There-
fore ,, heating system must supply 744 , 000 BTU/hr input.
Heating System
System will consist of two gas-fired heaters at 200 , 000 BTU/hr
and two at 170 , 000 BTU/hr for a total of 740 , 000 BTU/hr.
Please remember that this heating system is meant to operate
only when the manufacturing processes are shut down and excess
heat cannot be reclaimed for space heating. Any data which
you need concerning the amount of process heat that can be
reclaimed should be obtained directly from Norton Company.
If you have any questions , please call me .

Dear Mr. Clark:
Per your request, please be advised that approximately 290,000 BTU/hour
is the quantity of waste heat being generated by our process at subject
building. Phase II of this project will generate an additional 115,000
BTU/hour of waste heat. Phase II of this project is scheduled for the
latter half of 1983. Please note that we will be a two-shift, five-day
per week operation and that waste heat will only be available during
working hours. How all of this relates to the Massachusetts energy code
will remain with your interpretation. Should you have any questions,

Re : Norton Company
Dear Mr. Clark:
I spoke with Ron Abramshe at Norton concerning the amount
of reclaimed process heat which will be available in this
building and was informed that the waste was not sufficient
to provide 100% of the building ' s heating needs . So , I
have done some calculations comparing the heat loss allowed
by the present code with that of the building as it exists
today.
You can see that the reclaim heat will more than offset
the extra loss of the underinsulated building. Therefore ,
it is apparent that this building will use less new energy
to heat than one insulated in compliance with the latest
code without reclaiming process heat.

Re : Norton Company
Gentlemen:
Enclosed are three sets of our drawings B1793 SK1 through
SK4 dated April 6, 1982 . These drawings illustrate some
additional work we have been contracted to do for Cutler
Associates. Cutler Associates , as you may know, are
handling the process design work for Norton. These draw-
ings are to be used in conjunction with drawings already
submitted to you.
We have been contracted to do the following work:
1 . Construct the group of offices along the party wall
except for the mechanicals and electrical work.
2 . Cut out and patch the existing floors as required
for additional floor drains .
3. Cut out and patch the existing floors as required
for the tower, etc. , footing.
4 . Pour the footing and equipment support pads .
S . Cut roof opening for tower and reinforce the roof
for the snow build-up.
6 . Install insulation, roofing , siding, and flashing
after Cutler has erected the tower.
Per your conversation with one of our engineers , Brian
Hill, the existing permit can be changed to cover the
additional work shown on these drawings . The permit fee
should be adjusted accordingly.

Re: Norton Company
Dear Mr. Clark:
Enclosed are revised copies of the energy calculations for
this project .
Please note that per article 2013. 2 we are allowed to evaluate
a building' s actual annual energy consumption versus that
allowed by the energy code . If the actual annual consumption
is not greater than consumption if the building were designed
in compliance with articles 2008 . 0 through 2012 . 0 , then the
building is deemed as complying with this article . The
enclosed calculations were performed in an effort to show
that the actual energy consumption meets the above criteria.
Since power consumption for lighting and air conditioning is
obviously minimal and well within code limits , we have restricted
our analysis to building heating only.
The enclosed calculations were performed in more detail than
those previously sent to you. We have included the roof tower
insulation as well as the actual design temperatures in pre-
paring these calculations . We have also included the calcula-
tions for the unoccupied half of the building.
As you can see , the design temperature for the unoccupied half
of the building is only 40 degrees F , while the half occupied
by Norton will be kept at 65 degrees F during working hours
and 55 degrees F at night . Since these temperatures are sub-
stantially lower than the 72 degrees F allowed by the code ,
our total annual energy consumption compares quite favorably
with that allowed by the code .
Please note that the recovery of waste heat from manufacturing
processes will be used to supply a good portion of the heat
required. Norton will start manufacturing (with subsequent
waste heat recovery) on or about October 1, which is at the
very beginning of the heating season.

Dear Mr. O'Leary:
I Ifavo received your letter of July 26# 1962, anTUVe also dis-

the representatives of Norton Company.
Your calculations of July 26th., are based ou the very minimum
40 degrees F end 65 degrees F heat suppliedp with a poor R factor.
You are also computing Norton's unste heat gain.
It is cry understanding that your request is made for an occupancy
for any industrial use within this structure. I do not feel that
this office can issue an occupancy for a structure that does not
conform to Article 20 of the Mass. Code,
It mould appear to me that it mould be best to bring this build-
ine-to 'd-6hformance to heat loss. Any overabundanee of heat would
be a plus factor to the tenants in possession.
I have discussed this with the Norton Company on August 100 19820
and we are in agreement, It is my hope that this problem can be
resolved to everyoues mutual benefit. If I can be of further
assistance# please call.
Sincerely#
CECIL I. CLARK
