MA 01041 April 18, 1983 Mr. Cecil Clark, Building Inspector City of Northampton Building Department 210 Main Street Northampton, MA 01060 Re : Norton Company Expansion Dear Mr. Clark: Enclosed is a copy of the insulation shell loss analysis for the unoccupied half of the Norton Company building. The first section of this analysis shows that the maximum shell loss allowed by Code for this portion of the building is 3, 263 BTU/HR/oF. This shell loss is based on maximum U values of . 07 for the roof and . 25 for the walls . The roof area under considera- tion is 75 ' wide x 150 ' deep. Since we are considering this por- tion of the building as a separate entity, the wall area used in this portion of the calculations includes all four sides for a total of 450 lineal feet of wall. The second portion of this analysis includes the actual shell loss for this portion of the building . The roof will be receiving an additional 4" of glass fiber insulation bringing the total roof insulation to 5z" of glass fiber with the resulting U value of . 05 . The walls, as you know, are uninsulated concrete and will remain that way with an associated U value of . 38 . Since the room temperatures on both sides of the party wall which separates section A and B will be the same, we have chosen to ignore heat losses through this wall . As a result, the actual total shell loss for this portion of the building will be 3, 070 BTU/HR/oF. Since the actual shell loss will be slightly less than the total allowed shell loss, it is apparent that the addition of 4" of glass fiber insulation in the roof of this portion of the build- ing will allow us to comply with the present State Energy Code. If you have any questions concerning this analysis , please feel free to call me. Very tTuIy yours, EDWARD d. O' LEARY COMPANY, INC. `Edward y ,tt 1 :ar_,' R.P .E . They have told me that they plan to install some toilets in this portion of the building and in the future install some offices and experimental laboratories. As a result of this request, it is our intent to get the shell into a condition so that they can obtain an occupancy permit from you after they complete all of the interior work that they are going to do on the project . They will also be obtaining a building permit from you for the interior work that they intend to do. In the meantime, it is our intent to reinsulate all of the roof of the existing shell with 411 of vinyl-faced blanket insulation placed between the purlins . As a result of this insulation, our actual shell loss will be gr.Qa4-e-r than the maximum shell loss as allowed by Code. Enclosed is a letter from this office dated April 18 , 1983, explaining in detail the energy analysis plus the analysis broken down mathematically in accordance with standard engi- neering practices . I am forwarding this information to you for your permanent record and file. If you have any questions concerning this work that we intend to do, please don' t hesi- tate to give us a call . Ron Abramshe of the Norton Company told me on several different occasions that you wanted the enclosed information in connection with this portion of the building as soon as it became available. Many thanks for your patience and consideration. Very truly yours, EDWARD J. O' LEARY COMPANY, INC.
