Re:Renovations and Repairs
Dewey House
Smith College
The following is a summary report of my site visit and coordination meeting this morning. Demo in the
older attic was nearly complete, and reinforcement of the older roof was starting:
1. LVL’s under existing purlins will be dropped down to sit on top of the truss bottom chord. A cripple
wall will be built from the LVL up to the purlin. The existing timber beam and cripple studs in the
northern bay will be removed, and hangers added onto those existing rafters;
2. Existing brick nogging will have to be removed in the gable end wall of line 3 so that the LVL can
bear on the existing timber. The existing studs under the new LVL must be checked for bearing
tightness under the timber.
3. Short pieces of dimension lumber will be placed under the ridge board, attached to the rafters, and
bearing on the new LVL;
4. The gable end window in line 3 in the attic is partly under the ridge, not to the side as shown in the
Elevation 1/A2.1. A new header will be required. New jack studs could be placed in the sash weight
pockets. Header size is pending. Is design coordination required for placement of the new louver?
5. A new post will be required at the end of the new ridge LVL on line 6. Post size is pending.
6. There are no existing posts under the existing roof trusses. The 6x4xd steel angles cannot be
installed as shown on 1/S5. A custom top-mount saddle hanger will be required. Hanger design is
pending. Field measuring by the steel fabricator will be required.
Respectfully,
