Minutes of Meeting # 16 – July 5, 2012
Present: Charlie Conant (Smith College), Tom Lucia, Ann Ledwell, Jim Small, (Wright Builders), Laura

PROGRESS REPORT / OBSERVATIONS:
• Structural steel ongoing
• Electricians roughed in by end of day. Inspector today.
• Ductwork well underway (fire dampers in)
• Framing nearly complete
• Roofing watertight by end of day
• Insulation at walls started
SCHEDULE REPORT: Would like to start plaster by July 9th - Skeptical at this point, need inspections
first- Plasterer on site tomorrow to evaluate. Charlie asked if there will be Saturday work? Tom: Yes.
OLD BUSINESS:
Item Description / Discussion
1.4a Owner salvage: little left, tossing at this point. LF observed roof items on site – save.
1.4 AAB:
• Follow-up July 13th required by KFA. In progress.
• Written policy requested from Laura Rauscher.
1.5 Lift- slab poured, frame will start after structural repairs completed.
1.6 Windows- 85% installed, some rotten sills (set aside)
• Sash at revised bathroom window should be frosted.
• Window stops- will require “creative carpentry” thicker tapered stop with consistant
round.
1.7 Mechanical Items:
• 2 heating pipes in exterior wall- Tom requested bulletin for tracking CO.
• Radiator too long at bathroom. Jeff looking into in-stock choices. (not yet)
• Sprinkler main needs to be replaced to work on basement ducts - planning to start next
week). (Ordering some 3 1/2“ items- will move as soon as possible and do branch lines
later).
1.7a Slate / Roofing:
• Damage to cornice/rake molding @ older wing- will survey.
• Sheathing last section; should be water tight todlay; waiting on copper.
• Concern about schedule-slate not in yet.
1.7b Long lead items
• Millwork: resubmit (not yet) with changes and hardware.
• MEP Submittals:
o Temp controls–need back from L&S. already on site, to meet schedule)
o Misc Electrical: Laura clarified colors (Stainless covers in back halls, bathrooms,
seminar and Conference. Light Almond plates in Front hall and all offices and study.
3.2 Structural:
• Mailroom and stairs: all set except steel post by Acufab.
• 3rd floor purlin bearing at fire stairwell- mostly complete
• Stair Header (2nd – 3rd floor): Installed, chasing down to bearing below
• Ryan will need to update dwgs for as-builts).
• Third floor needs to be ready carpentry- July 9th need to start plaster. Steel going in now.
• Has Ryan looked at the hump in floor yet?
4.1 Interiors / Colors /Decorative Light Fixtures:
• Furnishings: Lorin working on this
• Paint Colors: provided, Benjamin Moore. Tom will ask for color matched.
• Signage: Submittal received. Laura needs to review this with Charlie. Direction sign to
AAB toilet.
• Window shade color will be needed.
7.1 Requisitions: Nothing new.
7.4 Sketches and Re-issues: nothing new required at this time
• SK-23: Bulletin Boards: LF to review with Charlie.
7.5 Shop drawings / Submittals
• Vacancy Sensors distributed today. ML Schmidt reviewed- no cost. Change okayed by
Charlie.
8.1 Change Order Proposals:
• Tom submitted a revised Change Request Log which was reviewed by Charlie, Laura, and
others after meeting.
• Break out requested for hot water tank so it can be ordered ASAP.
9.1 Insulation and Air Sealing: (see also new items below)
• PIP started in room 101.
• Blower door testing - not discussed further.
o Window/Room test: test after window and walls.
o Whole Building: last week or after occupancy for College records / PR.
• Infrared testing as they go. Laura reviewed this in room 101.
• Housewrap and Drainage Plain. Mock up and review horizontal + vertical interfaces w/
exterior trim - not discussed further.
• Band Joists at Old wing: Charlie to look at timber: Done after meeting. There is about 2”
above wall to 8 x 8 timber. Insulation expands towards this but doesn’t fill it completely.
• Band joists in new wing (at second floor framing): get to them at all back wing areas (drop
ceiling).
• Band joists in new wing (at third floor framing): can drill through foam outside
• Basement trenching for first floor band joists: Laura noted that end walls not fully demo’d
yet.
• Open wall areas: Will spray (open cell)
• Narrow cavities: R-6 rooms to be checked by Dino for cooling load (fine for heating), could
up fan speed if cooling load off. Everything was sized for low speed.
• New wing 3rd floor ceiling insulation
o Laura noted that drawings and specs call for closed cell but it seems that they are
just doing first 3 inches that way.
o Jim pointed out that it is easier to scrape open cell flush with bottom of joists
o Curtis said schedule could be shortened by approximately two days if switched to
open cell for the rest of the cavity (also good for environmental and scheduling
other work).
o R-Values: R-43 open cell, R-57 closed cell
o Decision: Okay to switch to open cell over 3” closed cell. Credit probably applied
towards harder work at band joists.
12.1 Fire Alarm / Sprinklers:
• No sprinkler for 3 days next week (moving basement main for duct work);, smokes
will be on; notify Smith.
• Conflicts with ducts: 3rd Floor and 1st floor between seminar room/existing hall.
o Foreman to review next week.
o Not a conflict with hall cabinets (over the ceiling).
12.6 Electrical Items:
• Existing wiring: price $18K; Dino to review. Tom suggested taking stairway and porch off?
Charlie requested that Joel and Jean figure out what has to be done.
• Hall occupancy sensors: Charlie concerned about time in sensor. Dino will have Mark (L&S)
talk to Charlie.
• Previous RFI:
o Joel will revise and resend.
o Laura work on room names and numbers for Simplex programming.
• Speaker wire no longer intact at seminar room. Tom: will absorb cost. What does college
want for replacement? Ceiling is wide open, so this would be the time to upgrade. Charlie
to get spec from IT folks-
• Fishing of wire not working at Front Section. Run at basement ceiling instead?
• Emergency Feed: reviewed again on site.- need feed out of the way soon to continue with
other work.
o Most Cost Effective solution seems to be to trench under porch with Junction box
located under porch.
o Inspector questioned non-conforming connection to Generator (in Greene Hall).
Joel said it could have been left completely unchanged. Junction box should be
sufficient. Joel will talk with other inspector.
o Charlie requested that Tom get a price to pull new feed just in case. Joel to
describe path.
• Other inspection issues: waiting to hear on capping abandoned outlets.
13.1 Underground Roof Drainage Pipes: need price
• Do trash differently? Charlie looking into this w/ grounds folk.
14.1 Plaster:
• Hoping to Start July 9th at third floor. Need significant area.
14.2 Fence:
• Possibly revise it, trash handled differently.
• Can we get white composite fence from another manufacturer - Tom has one.
NEW BUSINESS: incorporated into previously discussed items above
16.1 Demo of concrete steps not done yet.
16.2 Attic flooring (and insulation)
• Strengthen floor around ERV with plywood.
• Attic floor demo- take out what you need for insulation at knee walls and porch ceiling.
• Attic floor areas: Charlie reviewed with Tom after meeting. Keep as much as possible. Fill
in at old stair area.
• Ladder: Laura had asked for resubmittal on ladder. It should be the type that extents
railings in hook above floor.
16.3 Copper phone lines in Mech. Room: bundle, protect and relocate a little.
16.4 Basement Ceiling patching: Jim asked Charlie if it is okay to patch basement ceiling with 5/8”
gyp. Bd. Instead of plaster. Yes.
Next Meeting: Thursday July 12th, 9:00 am (at building site) and 10:00 (at conference
room).
