Re: The emergency Shelter at 123 Hawley Street
Dear Councilor Tymoczko:
This letter is in response to your request for a clarification on the total number of individuals
allowed to sleep in the emergency shelter at 123 Hawley Street.
In accordance with the provisions of Chapter II of the State Sanitary Code, 105 CMR
410.400 and based on the square footage in the bedrooms, the shelter at 123 Hawley Street
can provide sleeping accommodations for a maximum of fourteen (14)people. It is
permissible to have more than fourteen beds in the facility to allow for the fluctuating ratio of
females to males that may be seeking shelter, however, not more than fou_ een (14) of the
beds are to be occupied at any one time. No more than fourteen individuals, including both
clients and staff, may sleep in the shelter. Staff members are only counted against the limit of
fourteen(14), when they are sleeping in the shelter. Staff members on duty and not sleeping
are not counted against the limit.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or require additional
information.
Sincerely,
Peter J. McErlain
Health Agent
