Vreeland Design Associates Re: Simon Ahtaridis, 16 High Meadow Rd, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing roof to support proposed solar array. On August 20, 2013, I conducted a site visit and investigated the existing roof framing in the area of the proposed PV panel installation. The existing roof framing, apparently constructed around 1992, is constructed using roof trusses over the garage and the area of the main house roof where the proposed arrays will be located. The roof trusses over the garage and the middle section of the house span 26'. The section of roof that is east of the middle section and has a proposed array was not investigated due to a wall with rigid insulation having been installed in the attic separating the two sections. 1 will conduct another site visit when the project is begun and the installation crew can cut an access through the wall and I can confirm the framing of that section of the roof. Based on the engineering calculations of the roof trusses in the garage and middle section of the house, I expect the remaining section of roof to be constructed with trusses and mostly likely to be adequate to support the proposed array, but this needs to be confirmed. The roof trusses are installed at 24" on-center with an approximate 9/12 pitch. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed arrays. Based on the specified PV panel unit weight of 39.6 lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one truss and rafter, the existing roof framing of the garage and middle section of the house is adequate to support the proposed PV arrays. I anticipate that the remaining east section of roof to also be adequate to support the proposed array, but will need to be confirm at the start of the project.
