The mast was analyzed based on the LFRD design specifications for Steel Hollow
Structural Structures (AISC section 16.2). The mast is loaded by a combination of flexure
and axial compression.
The mast is 127" long, diameter =10 ", wall thickness = 0.19" and yield strength = 42 ksi
The mast is not a compact section (D /t =57), K =2.1 (ref. Table C -C2.1)
Flexural Analysis is based on Section 5.1, Equation 5.1 -2 applies. Axial Compression
analysis is based on section 4.2. Euler buckling equation K =2.1. The combined loading
analysis is based on section 7.1.

blowing the snow or for daily dumping at 60 Deg.
Due to the variability of snow density, it can be difficult to relate snowfall depths
directly to a force. The concept of water equivalent for a given snowfall is used to
convert snow load to a force in pounds per square foot (lb/ ft2). The design load of
151b/ ft2 is equal to a water depth of 2.9 ".
Listed below are data for a number of past extreme snow events showing both the snow
depth accumulation and the water equivalent.
Feb. 14, 2007 Northern VT: Maximum snow depth: 36in, Max water equivalent: 2in
Dec. 11, 2008 Coastal New England: Ice storm, ice accumulations up to 1in.
Dec. 20, 2009 Coastal New England: 18 -20in snow, 1 -1.5in water equivalent
Feb. 1 -2, 2011 New England: 15 -20in snow, 1.5in max water equivalent
Mar. 6 -7, 2011 Northern VT: 20 -30in snow, 2.5in max water equivalent
The snowfall totals for these events were taken from the National Climate Data Center's
Storm Event Data Base. The Water equivalents were taken from the National Weather
Service Advance Hydrologic Prediction Service's archival data for 24hr observed
precipitation.
C. Tracker Structural Analysis
The tracker support system, consisting of the mast and base bolts were designed to
meet the requirements of the AISC Manual for Steel Construction, LFRD, 3rd edition.

B. Snow Load
The All Sun Solar tracker has been rated for a snow load of 151b /ft2. This is based on an
extreme single event.
Our analysis is based on the tracker having an active control system that will change the
angle of the tracker to 60 Deg each morning. Snow does not accumulate due to wind

Tracker wind and snow loading analysis using ASCE7 -10 (Drawing NET1809 RevB)
A. Wind Analysis
ASCE 7 does not specifically address solar trackers. The closest match is an open sided
shed roof structure.
Our analysis is based on the tracker having an active control system that will reduce the
angle of the tracker with respect to the ground to less than or equal to 7.5 degrees in the
event of a high wind event. The control system for the tracker will also reduce snow
load on a frequent basis by dumping.
Chapter 26 discusses the general requirements for MWFRS (Main Wind Force Resisting
Structure. Figure 26.1 -1 directs us to Chapter 27 for the shed roof analysis.
Our analysis is for a relatively flat urban setting with significant number of trees/
shrubs nearby. We do not include topographic effects or other site specific conditions.
The following factors are from Chapter 26.
1. (Table 1.5 -1) Risk Category I - Low risk to human life in event of failure.
2. (26.5.1) Basic Wind Speed - Use site appropriate wind speed.
3. (26.6, Table 26.6 -1) Directionality Factor kd= 0.85, use load combinations in Section
2.3.
4. (26.7.2) Surface Roughness B - Urban conditions.
5. (26.7.3) Exposure Category B - Consistent with surface roughness B.
6. (26.7.4.1) Not applicable as we have open sided building.
7. (26.7.4.2) Not applicable.
8. (26.8) Not applicable. Kzt = 1.0
9. (26.9) Gust - Effect Factor Gf =0.85 for this analysis.
10. (26.10, Table 26.11 -1) Internal pressure coefficient GCpi =0
Chapter 27 is used to calculate the loads on the tracker using the requirements for a
mono sloped, open sided structure.
1. (27.7.1) Part 1 applies
2. (27.1.2) The tracker is currently being tested to determine its dynamic response.
3. (27.1.3) The tracker is currently being tested to determine its dynamic response.
