Dear Hans, Pierre:
Having seen firsthand the second floor framing support condition needing attention at the above
residence, I have calculated the Code -legal floor loading for that bedroom floor support beam
with a 13' -0" span.
1 based my calculations on the use of dried, seasoned hemlock, fir, spruce or red oak, and I have
for you the following size options, depending on what beam shape would best be suited for this
small house. The following beam sizes were calculated for full- dimension timbers as opposed to
the nominal dimensioning of the framing lumber with which we are so familiar. These. then are
your size options:
5'' x 12, 6' x I 1 " or 8" x 10"
Given the size of this building, I recommend use of an 8" x 10'' member. since its reduced height
w ould look best. given the small size of the rooms. Since this beam will span from one exterior
wall to a stair wall, both ends will need proper support: The one presumably atop the existing
foundation wall. and the other atop a wood post (4x4) in the basement setting on a small concrete
footing (say 12'' x 12,° or 14" x 14 ") minimum 5- inches thick with two #3 pencil rods in each
direction. Use a Simpson shoe at the base of the post to break direct contact between wood and
concrete.
This letter hopefully contains all of the information the building inspector may require of you. If
that is not the case. please be in touch. Thanks and kind regards to you both.
