Dear returning faculty,
Welcome back to the newly renovated Dewey House. As part of the project, you will be Ldad to
know that many of the requirements of the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board for an
accessible public building were addressed; new lift, wider doors, new accessible bathroom,
accessible kitchenettes, etc. Unfortunately, the conditions of the historic building did not allovk
Cull compliance. As an alternative to third floor accessibility and full clearances for doors at all
of the 21 floor offices we have provided a "flexible meeting room" on the second floor. This is
Room Number 208, located near the lift on the second floor.
Individuals wishing to visit an office on the third floor or a second floor office where the doors
are not wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair or other mobility device must be
accommodated by seeking an accessible location. Room 208 will provide a convenient
accessible alternative. Staff and faculty located in Dewey are asked to be mindful of the
intended use of the space and make it available if needed for this purpose. We ask too that you
keep it free of extra furniture and avoid storing boxes and other items that might impede
navigability for someone using a wheelchair. A calendar will be maintained at the entrance to
sign up for the room in advance when needed.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely.

ii. Room 102 (Philosophy Lounge): the threshold is 1" on the hall side and 0" on the
office side. There is no practical way of reconciling such a large change in
elevation; see notes above for Room 101.
2) Policy for "Flex Room ": attached to this email.
3) Digital Copies of our revised plans: attached to this email.
4) New handrail at the exterior wall of the historic curved stair: we have added this to our scope
of work. You will see it on the digital copy of the plans in a "bubbled note ".
5) Directional Signage: The condition for directional signage at the inaccessible toilet room
door has been noted and is currently being incorporated in to shop drawings for room signage
and indicated on the attached plans in a "bubbled note ".
Thank you for your consideration of our follow -up material. Please let me know if you have any
questions,

RE: Application for Variance — follow up from June 18 hearing
Dewey House — Smith College
4 Neilson Drive
Northampton, MA 01063
Dear Members of the Architectural Access Board,
On the June 18 hearing for the Dewey House, the following items were requested for our follow
up.
1) Threshold heights:
Our application read as follows: The first floor doors are of sufficient width (both newer
doors and older historic ones). There is sufficient clearance at all of these doors as well.
However, some of the doors off the front hall (approximately 6) have thresholds that are
thicker than allowed. This thickness takes into consideration significant floor level changes
in the adjacent rooms due to uneven settling, therefore a variance is requested for this aspect.
a. The following correction should be made: there are only TWO (2) thresholds in
questions. The over count was due to several reasons: I could not see the exact
conditions due to carpeting in one office, another door is being replaced because of other
requirements.
b. The two thresholds remaining for the variance requests are described below:
i. Room 101 (faculty office): threshold is 1.75 inches on the hall side and 0" on the
office side. There is no practical way of reconciling such a large change in
elevation between floor surfaces in two adjoining rooms. Because the floors are
literally at different heights it is not possible to simply replace the threshold with
one with a lower profile. However, if assistance is given to get into a room,
someone in a wheelchair can exit the room independently as there is no threshold
on the room side. It would create a tripping hazard to extend a ramping threshold
out into the hallway. As an alternative to access in these rooms, there are two
accessible rooms on the first floor (Conference 105 and Seminar 104) which can be
reserved when not used for classes. There is also the New "Flexible Meeting
Room - 208" on the second floor which was specifically designed for
accommodating this situation.
110 Pulpit Hill Road, Amherst MA 01002 413 -549 -5799 Fax: 413 -549 -7918 www.krausfitch.com
- ACCEPT the written policy regarding use of the "flexible meeting room" at the second
floor, for those unable to access a second or third floor office, where doors are not wide
enough to accommodate a wheelchair or other mobility device.
- ACCEPT the Kraus -Fitch Architects, Inc. First Floor Plan A -1.1, dated July 12, 2012
regarding the installation of the compliant wall side handrail at the historic curved stair
and the directional signage locations.

Re: Notice of Amended Decision of the Board; Dewey House, Smith College, 4 Neilson
Drive, Northampton; Docket Number V12 -040
Dear Mr. Gagnon,
On June 12, 2012 the Architectural Access Board ("Board") received your e -mail
submittal in response to the requirements of the Board's June 18, 2012 decision. The submittal
(attached) included the requested additional information regarding existing noncompliant door
thresholds, a handrail proposal for the wall side of the curved historic stairs, and the proposal for
directional signage and inaccessible toilet rooms and entrances.
The Board reviewed the submitted documentation during an administrative discussion at
their regularly scheduled July 16, 2012 meeting and voted as follows:
- GRANT the variances for the lack of compliant thresholds at Room 101 and 102, based
on the fact that the Petitioners had proven that full compliance at these locations would
be "impracticable" as defined in 521 CMR 5. The motion of the Board is based on the
condition that a written policy, similar to that of the policy already submitted, be
submitted regarding assistance being provided to get into these rooms if need be and
the availability of the alternate accessible rooms at the first floor (Conference Room
105 and Seminar 104). With said written policy to be received by the Board within 30
days receipt of this decision of the Board.
