MA Dear Mr, Hasbrouk, This office reviewed the above referenced site for the purpose of determining whether the existing roof structure was capable of supporting ar additional load introduced by the proposed solar panels The folowing is a summation of our observations. There are a total of 21 solar panel modules proposed for the southern facing section of roof. The solar panels have a footprint of 63.1" x 41.3" and weigh 44.1 pounds each. This translates into a unit weight of 2.5 psf per panel, The support rails have a minimal unit weight (.5 psf). The roof structure consists of 5/8" plywood over pre-fabricated roof trusses spaced at 24" or. center. The 8 Edition of the Massachusetts State Building Code (One and Two Family Dwellings) states that ground snow load for Florence is 40 psi, The truss design drawings prepared by Truss Engineering Corp. dated November 14. 2011 indicate that the pre-fabricated roof trusses were designed for 40 psf snow load. The truss top chords were also designed for an additional load of 10 psf specifically fo a solar pane allowance which is greater thar, the actual load of approximately 3 psf. Based on the field observations and the information noted above it is my professional opinion that the existing roof is structurally sound and able to support the additional weight of the soar panels If you have any questions concerning this letter or if I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
